Easy Cucumber Tomato Avocado Feta Salad with Dill

This cucumber tomato avocado feta salad is the kind of recipe I make when I want something fresh on the table without turning it into a whole project. There is no complicated dressing and no long ingredient list. It is just ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumber, creamy avocado, salty feta, fresh dill, lemon, good extra virgin olive oil, and salt.

The part that makes this salad taste better than the ingredient list would suggest is the way I season it. Instead of putting everything in a bowl, pouring dressing over the top, and tossing, I season the salad in layers. Tomatoes go down first and get their own salt, lemon juice, olive oil, and dill. Then the cucumber gets the same treatment. Then the avocado. Feta goes on top with one final drizzle of olive oil.

That means every level of the salad is already seasoned, so I do not have to aggressively toss everything together and break up the avocado or feta. It is a very simple technique, but it is exactly the kind of small thing that makes simple food taste intentional.

Why This Simple Salad Works

This salad is a good reminder that you do not always need more ingredients to create more flavor. When the vegetables are fresh, the job is really to make sure each one gets enough salt, acid, fat, and something aromatic.

Here, the lemon gives you acidity, the olive oil carries flavor and adds richness, the salt wakes up the tomatoes and cucumber, and the dill adds a fresh herbal note that makes the whole salad feel a little different from the usual tomato-cucumber combination.

The feta brings the salty, creamy finish, while avocado makes the salad feel substantial without turning it into a heavy side dish.

Cucumber Tomato Avocado Feta Salad Ingredients

Ripe tomatoes

Use tomatoes that actually taste good. Roma tomatoes, vine tomatoes, heirlooms, or whatever looks best will all work. Cut them into bite-size pieces so they can form the first layer of the salad.

Cucumber

I like an English cucumber or Persian cucumbers because they stay crisp and have tender skins. Slice them thick enough that they still have some crunch.

Avocado

Use an avocado that is ripe but still firm enough to hold its shape. Since I do not toss this salad much, the avocado stays in nice pieces instead of disappearing into the dressing.

Feta

Feta gives you saltiness and a creamy, tangy finish. I prefer larger crumbles rather than very fine feta because you get little pockets of cheese throughout the salad.

Fresh dill

Dill is one of my favorite parts of this salad. It is fresh, grassy, and slightly sweet, and it works especially well with cucumber, lemon, and feta. You do not need a huge amount, but I like enough that you can actually taste it.

Lemon, olive oil, and salt

This is the entire dressing. Fresh lemon juice gives the salad brightness, good extra virgin olive oil adds richness, and salt brings the vegetables to life. If you juice citrus often, a handheld citrus juicer (affiliate link) makes this especially easy. If you want even more lemon flavor without adding more acidity, finish the salad with a little lemon zest.

The Key: Season the Salad in Layers

If there is one technique I want you to take from this recipe, it is this: do not wait until the end to season the whole salad.

When all of the vegetables are piled into one bowl and dressing only goes over the top, some bites can be perfectly seasoned while others taste flat. Tossing solves part of that problem, but with avocado and feta it can also make the salad look messy and turn the avocado soft.

Layering lets you season each vegetable while you build the salad.

Chopped tomatoes seasoned with salt, lemon, olive oil, and fresh dill.
  1. Add the tomatoes to your serving bowl or platter.
  2. Season them with a pinch of salt, a squeeze of lemon, a light drizzle of olive oil, and some dill.
  3. Add the cucumber and repeat: salt, lemon, olive oil, dill.
  4. Add the avocado and season it lightly.
  5. Finish with feta, more dill, and a final drizzle of good olive oil.

By the time you reach the top, the salad is already seasoned all the way through. There is no need to toss it aggressively. At most, I will gently move a few pieces around before serving.

How to Make This Salad

This is less about exact technique and more about building the salad in the right order.

  1. Start with the tomatoes. Add them to a wide serving bowl. Sprinkle with a little salt, drizzle with some lemon juice and olive oil, and scatter dill over the top.
  2. Add the cucumber. Layer it over the tomatoes and season it the same way.
  3. Add the avocado. Place the avocado over the cucumber and give it a lighter amount of salt, lemon, and olive oil.
  4. Finish with feta. Crumble the feta over the top, add the remaining dill, and finish with one last drizzle of olive oil.
  5. Add lemon zest if you want it. This gives you a stronger lemon aroma without making the salad noticeably more acidic.

Serve it right away while the cucumber is crisp and the avocado is fresh.

Why I Do Not Use a Separate Dressing

A dressing is useful when it is adding something the ingredients need: sweetness, mustard, garlic, herbs, emulsification, or another flavor direction. But not every salad needs one.

In this salad, the vegetables and feta already provide plenty of character. Lemon, olive oil, and salt are enough to connect everything without hiding the fresh ingredients. That simplicity is the point.

If you like this kind of approach, it fits the same idea I use throughout my Flavor Builders: understand what the food needs, then add the few things that actually improve it.

What to Serve With Cucumber Tomato Avocado Feta Salad

This salad is especially good next to something warm and savory because it gives the plate freshness and acidity. I would serve it with my Lemon Dijon Chicken, Greek Yogurt Marinated Chicken, grilled chicken, fish, burgers, or a simple rice or grain bowl.

It also works well as part of a casual spread with bread, hummus, olives, and another protein. Because the salad is so simple, it does not compete with the rest of the meal.

Can I Make It Ahead?

This salad is best assembled close to serving because tomatoes release liquid after they are salted and avocado is at its best when freshly cut.

You can still do most of the prep ahead. Chop the tomatoes and cucumber and keep them refrigerated separately. Wash and dry the dill. Crumble the feta. Then cut the avocado and build the salad shortly before serving.

If you have leftovers, refrigerate them in a covered container and eat them within a day. The flavor will still be good, but the vegetables will be softer and the avocado may darken slightly.

Easy Variations

  • Add red onion: Thinly sliced red onion gives the salad more bite.
  • Add olives: Kalamata or Castelvetrano olives make it more savory and briny.
  • Use another herb: Parsley or mint can work, but dill gives this version its distinctive flavor.
  • Add lemon zest: My favorite optional addition when I want the salad to taste even more lemony without adding extra juice. A Microplane fine grater (affiliate link) makes quick work of the zest.

Total Time 15 minutes mins
Servings 4 side servings

Ingredients

  • 3 medium ripe tomatoes cut into bite-size pieces
  • 1 large English cucumber sliced
  • 1 large ripe avocado cut into chunks
  • 4 ounces feta cheese crumbled
  • 2 tablespoons fresh dill chopped, plus more to finish
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice divided, plus lemon zest if desired
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil divided
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt plus more to taste

Instructions

  • Add the tomatoes to a wide serving bowl or platter. Season with about one-third of the salt, lemon juice, olive oil, and dill.
  • Layer the cucumber over the tomatoes. Season again with another portion of the salt, lemon juice, olive oil, and dill.
  • Add the avocado. Season lightly with the remaining lemon juice and a small pinch of salt.
  • Scatter the feta over the top. Finish with the remaining dill and olive oil.
  • If you want stronger lemon flavor, finely zest a little lemon over the salad just before serving.
  • Serve without aggressively tossing. The salad is already seasoned throughout the layers.

Notes

Use the ingredient amounts as a starting point and adjust based on the size and ripeness of your vegetables. If your feta is very salty, use a lighter hand with the salt on the avocado and final layer.
